5 top tips for looking for a job through a recession/pandemic

2020 has been a challenging year. We’ve all had to drastically change our plans and the course of our lives. People have lost jobs that they may have been working for in a long time in or those who had just started out, wondering what the next step will be.

The hospitality industry, retail and tourism industries have been some of hardest hit and a lot of people are finding themselves in a position they never thought they’d be in. We’ve been completely taken off guard not sure what to do next.

I’ve put together some tips that may help you if you’re in this position which may help you in the job search:

1. Assess your skills. Take time to see where your skills can transfer into a different role. For example, if you were in a retail position, where you lost your job, would you consider a customer service/telesales role? Your customer service skills would be transferable, and you would be capable to carry out that position.

2. Research roles in a different industry. During a crisis there are certain industries that will (almost) always have jobs. For example, the health sector, telcomms and software companies are all areas that will continue to gain employment and there are various different jobs that go with it in sales, customer services, HR, Finance etc. Don’t be afraid to change industry and try something new. Again, this is where your skills will transfer. Even if it must be for a short while until things pick back up again.

3. Review your CV & Cover Letter. Your CV is your gateway into a company. Make sure it reads well and stands out to grab the attention of the recruiter. Ensure it matches the requirements of the job spec. If you don’t have the specific experience listed on the job spec, ensure you sell your transferable skills relatable to the role.

4. Reach out to your network. Reach out to old colleagues, friends, customers and ask for help with referrals maybe into their company or if they know of any open positions. Don’t be afraid to announce it on LinkedIn that you are ready and available for new jobs/opportunities, you never know what may be available for you.

5. Upskill. Take this time to upskill if needed to obtain a job that you’ve always wanted. There are many courses that you can take online and for free or low cost. Udemy.com is an excellent resource for low cost courses to upskill. This can make you more attractive to recruiters or give you the extra edge needed to get that job.

Most importantly try to remain positive. It’s not easy, it’s frustrating and nothing like we would have ever been able to plan for. But remain optimistic and don’t give up, things will change for the better eventually.
