As we start 2019 we feel we need to make changes and set goals. We start thinking of what we need to change, how to get there. Exercise more, quit the current job, be less stressed, be happier. Sometimes trying to set these goals make us more anxious then when we started which in turn demotivates us further.
Some people feel change is impossible and don’t know where to start so they just forget about it remaining unhappy. Nothing is impossible.
Set realistic goals that you can actually achieve. Stop thinking you can’t. Whether it’s your health goals, career goals, travel goals write down step by step of how you will achieve it but make it attainable. Every grand result starts with one small step.
Some changes can be harder than others especially when it comes to our careers. Our jobs take up about 1/3 of our lives. If you are unhappy in your job don’t be afraid to move. Find out what you want. Do the research, invest time in your quality of life. Don’t stay in that job thinking you’ll start to be appreciated soon when you know it's not true or waiting for that promotion that you may never get. Know your potential and your worth and make the move if necessary.
Here's an idea of how to set your goals and achieve them:
1. Write down your goal (have a maximum of 3, you don't want to burnout!)
2. Put a timeline around it
3. List the steps you will need to achieve it
4. Break these steps into small steps so you can tick off each point that you have passed
5. Evaluate every month to see if you are where you wanted to be and what you need to do to get there
6. Celebrate when you have achieved them!
7. Don't be hard on yourself if you aren't where you want to be by a certain time. Life is full of rollercoasters, you just need to keep going, adapt and have fun on the way!
